In the year that Cannes celebrates its 70th anniversary it"s fitting that the opening film – Arnaud Desplechin"s Les Fantômes d"Ismaël (Ismael"s Ghosts) – is a more-French-than-French affair. The Gallic auteur is a firm friend of the festival, with several of his previous films, including Ma Vie Sexuelle, La Sentinelle, and Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian debuting in competition. Mathieu Amalric heads up an ensemble of French acting royalty that includes Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Louis Garrel. Amalric plays Ismael, a film-maker whose life with Sylvia (Gainsbourg) is interrupted when his lost love Carlotta (Cotillard) returns from the dead.
