芽孢杆菌科细菌的1科。本科细菌为能形成芽孢 (内生孢子)的杆菌或球菌。芽孢是休眠体,不是繁殖体。绝大多数是一个菌体仅形成一个芽孢。芽孢位于菌体内,由核心、皮层、芽孢壳和外壁组成。核心是芽孢的原生质体,内含DNA、RNA、可能与 DNA相联系的特异芽孢蛋白质以及合成蛋白质和产生能量的系统。粹,还有大量的吡啶二羧酸钙布满整个芽孢。皮层处于核心和芽孢壳之间,含有丰富的肽聚糖。芽孢壳主要由蛋白质组成,此外,还有少量的碳水化合物和类脂类,可能还有大量的磷。最外层是外壁,其主要成分是蛋白质、一定量的葡萄糖和类脂。由于芽孢具有厚而含水量低的多层结构,所以折光性强、对染料不易着色,芽孢对热、干燥、辐射、化学消毒剂和其他理化因素有较强的抵抗力,这可能与芽孢独具的高含量吡啶二羧酸有关。《伯杰氏鉴定细菌学手册》(第8版)将本科分为5个属,其主要鉴别特征见表。本科细菌对外界有害因子抵抗力强,分布广,存在于土壤、水、空气以及动物肠道等处,与人类关系密切。如炭疽芽孢杆菌引起人、畜的炭疽病;破伤风梭菌引起破伤风;肉毒梭菌、产气荚膜梭菌和蜡状芽孢杆菌引起食物中毒;韦氏梭菌和产气荚膜梭菌引起气性坏疽。对人有利的芽孢菌有枯草芽孢杆菌,产生工业或医疗用的蛋白酶、淀粉酶;丙酮丁醇梭菌用于生产丙酮丁醇;多粘芽孢杆菌生产多粘菌素;地衣芽孢杆菌生产杆菌肽;著名的细菌杀虫剂──苏云金芽孢杆菌能杀死 100多种鳞翅目的农林害虫,现已扩大到杀蚊、蝇幼虫;日本甲虫芽孢杆菌、幼虫芽孢杆菌和缓病芽孢杆菌可用于防治蛴螬等地下害虫。芽孢杆菌分解有机物能力强,在自然界的元素循环中起重要作用。有些种(如多粘芽孢杆菌和巴氏梭菌)有固定分子态氮的能力。
