画论绘画理论的简称。包括绘画审美理论、绘画批评、绘画技法理论等内容。画论是艺术家和理论家在长期的艺术实践中总结出来的经验，标志着人们对于绘画艺术的审美特点与表现手段的认识水平。古代西方，在苏格拉底、柏拉图、亚里士多德等人的美学著作和普林尼、鲍萨尼阿斯等人的历史著作中，已有大量论述涉及绘画中的模仿、比例、美与丑、素描与色彩等问题。但这些零星的或专门的文字大都只是经验性的评述。文艺复兴时代，在人文主义思想和科学方法影响下,欧洲才真正形成具有理论体系的绘画理论,透视学和解剖学是当时画论的主要内容。L.达·芬奇的画论笔记是当时欧洲画论的杰出代表。18世纪德国文艺批评家G.E.莱辛的《拉奥孔》专门论述了绘画与诗歌的界限，是比较美术理论的重要论著。近现代以来，有关绘画的理论大量见之于画家的言论、日记、书信和美学家、文艺批评家的各种著述中。中国的绘画理论,最早散见于先秦诸子的言论中,不成系统，而且往往是以论画说明某一伦理的或哲学的问题,但对后世影响很大。自东晋顾恺之开始,出现了专门的画家论画的著作。经历代发展，形成了自成系统的中国古代画论体系,著作宏富,体裁多样（包括画论、画评、画史、著录、题画诗等），门类丰富（包括人物、山水、花鸟等门类的理论），阐述精微，是有待于进一步整理和研究的古代艺术理论遗产。
