湘西土家族苗族自治州湘西土家族苗族自治州位于中国湖南省西北部。辖吉首市和泸溪、凤凰、花垣、保靖、古丈、永顺、龙山7县。人口212.82万。土家族主要聚居西北部，苗族主要聚居南部，并有汉、白、瑶、壮、侗等族。1957年成立湘西土家族苗族自治州。吉首县于1981年改市，为自治州首府。自治州处高山深谷地带，气候垂直变化明显，自然资源丰富。主属亚热带常绿阔叶林区，植被类型多样，植物种类繁多，具有重要经济价值的用材、油脂、纤维、饮料、淀粉、鲜果和药用植物近200种，成片的原始次生林中保存有水杉、珙桐、银杏等古老树种。野生动物种类繁多，有金丝猴、猕猴、鼯鼠、麝、大鲵等珍稀动物。草场面积广阔，野生饲草丰富。河溪落差大，水力资源丰富。矿藏有汞、锰、铝、铅、锌、煤、磷等。林业占重要经济地位，林地占土地总面积的75％，森林覆盖率35％，用材林有松、杉、樟等，经济林有油桐、茶、油茶等，盛产五倍子、黄连等中药材。农作物以水稻、玉米、甘薯为主。烟草种植普遍。饲养猪、牛、羊为传统副业。湘西黄牛、武陵黑猪为良种。工业有电子、采矿、机械等。第二次国内革命战争时期，龙山、永顺等县是湘鄂川黔革命根据地的中心，湘鄂川黔省革命委员会旧址犹存。永顺猛峒河一带为著名自然风景区。古迹有永顺玉村溪州铜柱和凤凰黄丝桥古城等。
