危险货物运输在铁路运输中，属化工原料及化工制品的货物具有与一般货物不同的特性，如黄磷在空气中能自燃、雷管受冲击会爆炸、硫酸有强烈腐蚀性、氰化钠有强烈毒性、同位素钴60能放射出射线等。因此，凡在铁路运输中，具有爆炸、易燃、毒害、腐蚀、放射性等特性，在运输、装卸和贮存保管过程中，容易造成人身伤亡和财产毁损而需要特别防护的货物，均属危险货物。 危险货物的危险性主要取决于货物自身的理化性质，以及外界的环境条件。这些货物的理化性质具有的爆炸、易燃、腐蚀、毒害、放射性，是这些货物具有的内因特性。但是这些特性必须在一定的外因条件下才能显露出来。在铁路运输中进行的装车卸车、车内配装、库内存放以及调车作业、列车运行等，偶有不当就会造成内因变化的外因条件，招致事故的发生。如黄磷能自燃这是它本身的理化性质，但黄磷只能在有氧气的条件下才能自燃，而黄磷不能和水发生作用。因此，在铁路运输中将黄磷封存在水中使之隔绝氧气，在这个条件下即使将水加热到100℃，黄磷也不会自燃起来。 所以，只要我们以科学的态度掌握各类危险货物的性质和变化条件，严格按规章办事，在搬运、装卸、运送、保管过程中杜绝可能导致造成内因变化的外因条件，就能保证安全、迅速地完成危险货物的运送工作。 为了安全、迅速、经济、便利地完成运输任务，必须正确地判定什么是危险货物，什么是非危险货物，以免酿成事故，造成损失，影响铁路运输效率。 具体判定方法如下； 在《危险货物品名表》中列载的品名，均按危险货物运输。在《危险货物运输规则参考资料》中列载的品名，可按普通货物条件运输。 托运《危险货物品名表》中未列载的危险货物时，可按《危险货物运输规则》有关规定确定运输条件。 危险货物品种繁多，性质复杂，要求运输保管条件不一。为了便于制定相应的运输条件，采取相应的防护措施及一旦发生事故便于施救，按危险货物性质相近、运输条件相同的原则，将危险货物分为九类：一类：爆炸品；二类：压缩气体和液化气体；三类：易燃液体；四类：易燃固体、自燃物品和遇湿易燃物品；五类：氧化剂和有机过氧化物；六类：毒害品和感染性物品；七类：放射性物品；八类：腐蚀品；九类：杂类。
