一 学校简介

1. How does participation in MOOC discussion forum affect achievement - an analysis of students’ social presence and emotions in relation to their completion status

Low course completion rates have been a common problem across different MOOCs. Previous studies showed that the socio-emotional factor plays an important role in learners’ engagement and performance in MOOCs. Although many studies have investigated students" social behaviors and expressed emotions in MOOC discussion forums, the coarse-grained classification of social behaviors and emotions provide limited implications for instructional design in MOOCs to retain learners and help them succeed. In this study, we intend to thoroughly and systematically explore the socio-emotional aspect of MOOC learners in relation to their completion status. To achieve this goal, we use machine learning to automatically classify forum posts into different categories of social presence and achievement emotions, and examine the correlations between these socio-emotional factors and learners’ completion rate. 2. Understanding the behavioral patterns of learners with different levels of prior knowledge in adaptive learning system

Adaptive learning aims to help learners with different levels of prerequisites better navigate learning by providing personalized support. However, few empirical studies were available to investigate how different learners responded to the adaptive scaffolding based on their varied prior knowledge levels. In this study, we analyzed the behavioral patterns of incoming pharmacy students in a graduate program as they used an adaptive learning system that prepared them for graduate courses in Biology and Chemistry. This research provides empirical evidences and useful insights about how analytics can inform the effective instructional design in adaptive learning in higher education settings.
