刺激刺激stimulus作用于活体系统（细胞、组织、器官以至生物整体）并引起其反应的动因（内外环境的多种变化）。按其性质，刺激可分为电、光、声、冷热或机械等物理性刺激，以及各种化学性刺激；按其效应，刺激又可分为使生物组织、器官显示其功能或增强其功能的兴奋性刺激和使生物功能消失或减弱的抑制性刺激。生物体中的所有细胞都具有对刺激作出反应的性质，即应激性，但不同细胞的敏感程度和反应程度却有明显差异。神经与肌肉细胞对刺激敏感，反应显著，很小能量变化的刺激，就能导致它们从静息状态迅速转入兴奋状态，产生冲动，即动作电位。因此，又把神经与肌肉细胞具有的这种应激特性叫做兴奋性。引起神经或肌肉兴奋的刺激种类很多，如各种化学刺激、机械刺激、改变渗透压的物理化学刺激等。瞬时的单一电刺激只要达到一定强度，就会引起神经纤维或细胞产生一个动作电位。能引起反应最弱的刺激叫阈刺激，其强度值称为阈强度。在达到阈值后再增强电刺激的强度，并不能引起更大的反应。生理学上把这种阈下刺激无反应，阈刺激和阈上刺激在单个神经纤维或肌肉细胞都出现同一幅度和时程的反应叫做全或无定律。在一个有效刺激后的很短时间内，神经纤维对下一个刺激不发生反应，这段时间叫做不应期。刺激可兴奋组织或细胞，需要有一定量的电荷通过才能引起其兴奋。这个量的大小与组织或细胞功能状态有关。一般情况下可将阈强度的大小作为反映组织兴奋性的指标；引起组织兴奋的阈强度低，说明它的兴奋性高，反之则其兴奋性低。
