电视发射台发送电视信号的台站。它是把视频信号和音频信号调制后转换成已调射频振荡,送到天线发射出去,供电视接收机接收。电视发射台设备主要包括机房内的发射机和配属的信号输入、监视、监听、监测设备，室外的馈线、天线和铁塔，还有配电系统、空调、通信设备等附属设施。通常一座铁塔可安装几副不同频道的天线，机房内也相应地有多部不同频道的发射机。电视发射的信号除了从电视中心通过电缆、光缆或微波送来的以外，还从接收电视广播卫星或其他电视发射台（差转）获得。接收到的电视信号一般经过校正传输畸变后，再送到发射机。根据需要，有的发射台可由电视中心遥控操作。电视发射机 把电视图像和伴音信号转变成可供天线向空间辐射电磁波的强力射频电流的电子装备，包括图像发射机、伴音发射机和双工器等。电视图像和伴音信号经过处理放大后，分别在图像发射机和伴音发射机中调制两个载波，图像信号对高频图像载波调幅，并被处理成残留边带形式；同时伴音信号对比图像载波高一个伴音中频的高频伴音载波进行调频。两者通过双工器组合成某一电视频道的射频电流。这种图像和伴音分开的发射机称为双通道电视发射机（见电视）。早期的电视发射机采用中等功率的末前级调制方式，后来改用低功率的中频调制方式，即固定频率的中频图像载波和中频伴音载波。后者具有较高的性能，更便于标准化和系列化，只需要改变本振频率和功放部分就可制造不同频道、不同功率等级的各种发射机。发射机除有主要的电路系统,还有电源、控制和冷却系统,发射机的功率范围大致为：甚高频(VHF)从几瓦到几十千瓦；超高频(UHF)功率要大些，从几十瓦到一、二百千瓦；对于图像发射机和伴音发射机合一的单通道电视发射机，在选用与双通道发射机同样的末级功率管情况下它的发射功率稍小，一般在10千瓦以下。差转机 一种小型接收转发设备。它把收到的某一频道的高频电视信号用差频方法变换成另一频道的高频电视信号，再转发出去。差转机通常装设在山区或主发射台服务区的边缘地区，用来改善当地的接收条件，扩大电视广播服务面积。电视发射天线 把电视发射机产生的强力射频电流转换为向空间辐射的电磁波的系统。电视发射天线一般装在高铁塔上，或把铁塔架在高山或高楼顶上，以增大覆盖面积。通常还用增加辐射单元层数来增强水平方向的辐射场强，以提高全向天线的增益。有时也用定向发射天线，即在一个或某几个特定方向上加强辐射而在其他方向减弱辐射，以进一步提高天线增益和对不同地区进行有选择的广播覆盖。天线增益用G 表示，其数值在甚高频频段是 7分贝以下；在超高频频段可高达17分贝。大多发射台都用水平极化天线。
