晶面晶体在自发生长过程中可发育出由不同取向的平面所组成的多面体外形,这些多面体外形中的平面称为晶面。特定取向的晶面必定与晶体中对应的一组互相平行的平面点阵相平行。可以规定一套整数hkl来反映某特定晶面及其相应平面点阵组的取向,这一套整数称为晶面指标。晶面(或平面点阵组)指标的严格定义是晶面在三个晶轴上的倒易截数之比。设a、b、c为晶体的一套基向量,晶面在a轴、b轴、c轴上所截长度分别为ra、sb、tc,则r、s、t为晶面在三个晶轴上的截数,而为倒易截数。将晶面在三个晶轴上倒易截数之比化为一组互质整数,即则这一套互质整数即为晶面指标,用(hkl)符号来表示。图中示出金属铜单晶的晶面指标及其相应取向。晶体在实际生长过程中,基于能量的原因,一般是指标小的晶面较易在晶体的外形中呈现出来。不同指标、不同取向的晶面由于原子、离子、分子排列上的差异,将具有不同的物理和化学性质,这是晶体各向异性的一种表现。晶面间距定义为与晶面对应的平面点阵组中相邻平面点阵的垂直距离。如对具有简单立方点阵型式的晶体,指标为hkl的晶面间距dhkl与晶胞参数a有dhkl=的关系。对于具有带心点阵型式的晶体,计算dhkl值时要作一定的修正。
