马家窑遗址中国黄河上游新石器时代到青铜时代的遗址。马家窑文化或马家窑类型由此得名。位于甘肃省临洮县城西南 10公里洮河西岸马家窑村南面。面积约 9 万平方米。1924年瑞典学者J.G.安特生发现并试掘。1957年起甘肃省博物馆曾多次对遗址进行调查，1964年试掘。遗址文化内涵丰富，包含有仰韶文化庙底沟类型、马家窑文化的石岭下类型、马家窑类型、半山类型、马厂类型和齐家文化、辛店文化、寺洼文化等，其中以马家窑类型最为丰富。该遗址对研究马家窑文化及黄河上游地区诸史前文化具有重要价值和意义。1988年中华人民共和国国务院公布为全国重点文物保护单位。遗址断崖暴露的文化层厚约3.5米,房址有方形、圆形，多为半地穴式。居址旁有公共墓地,仰身直肢葬,随葬彩陶较多。马家窑类型的陶器以细腻光洁的泥质橙黄陶为主。彩陶特别发达，均为黑彩。施彩的部位极为广泛，多施于口沿和外壁，有的施于盆、钵类的内壁。纹饰以几何形花纹为主，常以弧边三角、直线、圆点等花纹相互组合，构成动感较强、极具韵律的旋涡纹、同心圆纹、果实叶茎纹以及蛙纹、变体鸟纹等。图案布局因器物造型、功用不同而异，构图富丽明快，线条流畅多变。夹砂粗陶多饰绳纹和各类堆纹，个别器物上部施彩，下部饰绳纹。器形主要有瓮、罐、壶、瓶、盆、钵、碗以及带流锅等。石器有铲、刀、镰、磨盘等。
