自动测量能自动辨别被测长度合格与否或能自动分选的长度计量技术。自动测量可以只测量一个参数，也可以同时或连续不断地测量一个工件的多个参数，有主动测量和线外自动测量两种。线外自动测量是指测量结果的信息不直接用于控制加工的测量，例如用自动分选机、自动检验机和多尺寸检验装置测量已加工完毕的工件。自动分选机用于测量配合精度高、需要把公差带（见公差）分成若干尺寸组进行选配的工件。自动分选机的基本工序(见图)都是自动的。料斗中的工件由送进机构送入测量位置后，由长度传感器将被测尺寸转换为电信号，经分组线路处理后控制执行机构进行分选和剔除废品。自动检验机用于检验成品工件的尺寸、形状和位置误差等。它能将被测工件分为合格品、可修品和废品 3组。多尺寸检验装置和自动检验机的用途基本相同，但前者的装、卸工件是手动的，结构也较简单；而后者的基本工序一般都是自动的。
