低温液体介质击穿在足够强的电场作用下，低温液体介质失去绝缘性能而变成导电状态。电工中使用的低温液体指温度低于100K的液化气体，主要有液氮液氢和液氦。低温液体是一种良好的绝缘介质。与变压器油相比，除液氦的击穿电压稍低外,液氢和液氮的击穿电压均高于变压器油,与一般常温下的液体介质相似。低温液体的击穿电压和一系列因素有关，如电极距离、温度、压力、电极材料和表面状态、液体中的杂质以及电压种类等。图示不同低温液体的交流工频击穿电压与电极距离、温度的关系。低温液体介质的击穿机理与常温下液体介质的击穿相似。对纯净低温液体的击穿理论主要有电击穿理论和气泡击穿理论。电击穿理论和气体放电的汤森理论相似。从阴极发射的电子在电场中加速，和液体分子碰撞并使之电离，电子增加形成电子崩，最后导致击穿。气泡击穿理论是在强电场下，低温液体介质因电子加热等原因产生气泡，气泡内发生放电导致液体介质击穿。因为低温液体的蒸发潜热比一般液体要小，比较容易形成气泡。实际工程上所采用的低温液体不可避免地含有杂质，而杂质的介电系数比低温液体介质的大，在外界电场作用下容易排列成"小桥"，而使击穿电压下降。试验表明，流动中的液氮的击穿电压比静止时高，这是因为流动阻止了杂质颗粒向高强场区集中，而不容易形成"小桥"。
