经济适度人口经济适度人口经济适度人口能获取最大经济效益的人口规模。如何衡量最大经济效益，西方学者提出各自不同的标准。如美国经济学家P.A.萨缪尔逊定义为人均收入达到最大值，法国人口学家A.索维则认为人均产量达到最高值。假定劳动力人口在总人口中所占的比重是一个常量，那么人均产量就可定义为按人口平均计算的社会劳动生产率Q，即:Q一X/尸X为总产量，可用社会产品、国民收入或国内生产总值来计量，尸为人口(劳动力)数量。当人口〔劳动力)增加时，每增加一个单位的人口(劳动力)所增加的产量，定义为边际劳动生产率Q‘，即:Q‘一△X/△尸△X为产量增量，△尸为人口(劳动力)增量。倘若Q‘>Q，增加人口(劳动力)有利于提高社会劳动生产率Q，当人口(劳动力)继续增加到使Q，一Q，即Q‘时，社会劳动生产率达到最高水平，它们对应的人口(劳动力)尸‘，就是经济适度人口。其间的关系如下图所示:横轴代表人口(劳动力)，纵轴代表产量图21一2以上介绍的经济适度人口，并未引入技术进步的因素。事实上，技术进步是提高社会劳动生产率的决定性力量，技术进步的不同性质(如增人、技术进步、减人、技术进步和不增不减人技术进步等)及其拓展规模，将改变平均劳动生产率Q和边际劳动生产率穿的运行轨迹，从而使适度人口规模处于不同的位置上。经济适度人口理论涉及的问题异常复杂，在方法论上还有待深化。但越来越多的学者趋于一种共识，即在特定地域、特定条件下，一个模糊的经济适度人口界限确实是存在的。
