电位描述电场的一个物理量。又称电势。是个标量。静电场中某点P 的电位φ,数值上等于单位正电荷处于该点时具有的位能，即单位正电荷从该点P 移至参考点Q 时电场力对它作的功，式中E 为电场强度, dl为积分路径上的线元。在国际单位制中，电位的单位为伏[特](V)。参考点可以任意选择。理论上常取无限远处作为参考点,其电位为0。电工中则常取大地为参考点。在静电场中作电场强度的环路积分，有即静电场为无旋场。所以由场中一点P至另一点Q,E 的路径积分与 P、Q两点位置有关，而与积分路径无关。当参考点Q选定后,场中各点的电位各有一定值。这就形成了一个电位函数，它是空间坐标的标量函数。可以根据φ 进一步求出电场强度矢量。一般说来,静电场中各点的电位不同;但在场中存在着许多电位相同的点，由等位点组成的面称等位面。作电场图时，如使任何两个相邻等位面间的电位差都相等，则等位面愈密之处电场强度愈大。电场强度的方向与等位面的法线方向一致，并从高电位指向低电位。对于真空中孤立的静止点电荷q所建立的电位,可以对其电场强度自无穷远至观察点进行线积分得出式中r是q至观察点P的距离,ε0是真空的介电常数。根据叠加原则，一组点电荷所建立的电位等于各电荷分别建立的电位的叠加。
