骨化石含氟量断代利用骨化石中的含氟量来估计相对年代的断代技术。地下水中的氟进入埋在地下的骨头中,会使骨头中的无机磷化合物──羟基磷灰石变为氟磷灰石。由于这一过程是不可逆的,因此骨头中的氟含量愈高,表示埋在地下的时间愈长。又由于吸附地下水中的铀,骨头中的含铀量逐渐增加;因蛋白质逐渐分解消失,骨头中的含氮量不断减少。因此,往往可同时用 3种方法进行检验以作比较。实际上地下的环境条件各地是不一样的,这种化学变化的速度不可能完全一样,所以不能作绝对断代,但可以区别同一地点地下骨化石的时代早晚。曾用此方法鉴定一度被认为是早期原始人类的英国皮尔当人化石,结果证明是伪造的。
