植物根系在土壤中分布的深度和广度常因植物的种类、生长发育的好坏、土壤条件以及人为因素的影响的不同而异。根在土壤中的分布分为深根系和浅根系两类。有些植物的主根发达,向下垂直生长,长入土壤的深层达2~5米,甚至10米以上,这种向深处分布的根深,称深根系。如大豆、蓖麻、马尾松等。而另一些植物的主根不发达,侧根或不定根较主根发达,并以水平方向朝四周扩展,并占有较大的面积,因此这种根系常分布在土壤的浅层(1~2米),称浅根系,如车前、小麦、水稻等。一般直根系多为深根系,须根系多为浅根系。但不是所有的直根系都属于深根系。根的深度在植物不同生长发育期也是不同的,一般规律是根系和植物的地上部分具有一定的相关性,如任何植物苗期的根均很浅。农作物的根系大都分布在土壤的疏松耕作层里,适当的深耕可以增加根系的吸收面积,使作物获得高产。此外,不同作物进行间作套种时,必须考虑这些作物的根系在土层中的分布状态,如用深根系和浅根系作物互相搭配,能够分别吸收利用不同深度土层中的肥水,则有利于提高单位面积的产量。
