社会地位人们在社会关系网中所处的位置。通常是根据财富、声望、受教育或权力的高低和多寡作出的社会排列。生产关系是一切社会关系的基础，在阶级社会中，由生产关系所决定的人的阶级地位是一个人的基本社会地位。每一个人都在一定社会中结成多种社会关系，都可能获得多种社会地位。根据不同的标准，可以把人们的社会地位划分为不同的等级序列，如阶级地位、政治地位、经济地位、职业地位、权力声望地位等。这些社会地位之间互相交错，在很大程度上是一致的，大体上可以归纳为先赋地位与自获地位两类。前者指先天固定的地位，如世袭贵族、世袭奴隶、父与子等。后者指靠后天努力获取的地位，如教授、工程师、厂长等。社会学十分重视对多种地位间的相互关系的研究。首先是关于地位一致和地位相悖的研究。地位一致指个人所具有的多种地位都处在大致相同的水平上，如一个人兼有较高的阶级地位、教育地位、职业地位。在社会流动较少和等级森严的社会里，地位一致性较强。地位相悖指个人在不同领域的地位高低层次不一致的情况，如一个阶级地位较低的人获得了较高的教育地位。社会经济地位与社会声望地位也有不一致的情况。社会学还十分关注首要地位的问题，这是指一个人在诸种地位不一致的情况下,有一种最突出的地位支配着其他地位,从而决定了他总的地位水平。在现代社会中，职业活动往往是人们最重要的活动，人们为之付出了主要精力，因而它通常是首要地位。首要地位随社会条件与主观条件的变化而变化。人们可以通过自己的努力改变不利的首要地位，获得自己所期望的首要地位。
